When Microsoft released Service Pack 2, their latest bundled update, there were many compatibility problems. Many proprietary applications that functioned under Service Pack 1 and earlier, no longer functioned when a system was upgraded to service pack 2. There have also been reports of blue screen errors, and system crashes after upgrading to service pack 2. Additionally, the benefits to upgrading to service pack 2 are few. The added security center does no more than notify you whether or not you have Antivirus, and firewall software running at the current time, and tell you whether or not you have automatic windows update enabled. Internet explorer has an added pop-up blocker, which was long overdue, however it functions in an insecure manner. Instead of stopping pop-up ads from loading, Internet Explorer simply loads the pop-up hidden, giving you the option to view it or not. Any code embedded in advertising that will load spyware onto your system, is still able to run. We recommend running Windows XP with service pack 1. If service pack 2 is completely necessary in your environment, then we recommend performing a clean installation as opposed to upgrading.
